The Janelia Operations team relieves the administrative responsibilities for its scientists so that they can make important, sometimes unimagined discoveries.
Janelia has a capable operations team who work together to quickly eliminate barriers to scientific progress in an environment of openness, trust, and shared responsibility. Our philosophy is to keep processes as simple, straightforward, and unencumbered by bureaucracy as possible. Janelia’s operations team is extremely flexible and responds efficiently to ever-changing scientific needs. Our culture is built on collaboration, unrestricted creativity, and scientific freedom.
There are six operations departments at Janelia:
Budgeting at Janelia Farm is designed to sustain and advance scientific research through careful planning and efficient use of Institute funds.
Partnering with scientific and operational staff, Finance provides high quality, useful, and meaningful financial data in a timely fashion to support both the research and business needs of Janelia Farm.
Purchasing’s goal is for scientists to find the supplies and equipment they need readily available for purchase either at Janelia, or quickly available through a centralized ordering function supported by this team.
Our Human Resources team executes with corporate social responsibility. Operating with ethical principles, they partner with lab heads, hiring managers, and staff to deliver high-quality, highly-interactive, and caring human resource expertise. The team supports strategic recruiting, talent management, performance goal setting and evaluation, training and development, and employee relations.
Technology Transfer supports scientists at Janelia who are developing new tools and techniques – to ensure that these will be shared with the scientific community to speed progress of science.
The Children’s Learning Laboratory nurtures each child’s unique qualities and potential. Staff members encourage learning through child-initiated activities; introduce children to fine arts; help every child feel special; and respect and value individual differences.
Campus amenities promote Janelia’s distinctive collaborative environment, and support Janelia Farm’s conference program, visiting scientist program, and student programs. Campus Services oversees dining and pub services, meetings and conferences, the fitness center and sport courts, campus housing, and other on-site services such a convenience store, dry-cleaning, car wash, banking, Zip Car rental, and other commuting options. In support of these objectives, our Facilities department maintains the highest standards for building and laboratory operations, landscape maintenance and improvements, architectural and laboratory renovations, custodial services, security, and equipment / instrumentation installation and maintenance.
Lab Administration oversees a capable team of lab coordinators, providing the scientific staff the freedom to focus on breakthrough science by relieving administrative duties. Through resourcefulness, communication, and teamwork, lab coordinators coordinate such details as travel arrangements and expenses, meeting coordination, purchasing, and asset management.
The Library at Janelia Farm anticipates the needs of passionate researchers. By utilizing innovative tools and proactive, forward-thinking approaches, the library team enhances sciences by connecting people with information to create knowledge. Numerous databases are available to Janelia researchers online, or library staff will provide literature search services as well as document delivery.
The goal of Environmental Health & Safety / Compliance is to protect life, property, and the environment by proactively promoting safety, compliance, environmental stewardship, and programs that enrich our quality of life.
The Special Projects function at Janelia has two objectives: to enhance the environment and optimize creativity, and to evaluate and improve business processes. The Special Projects team manages sculpture, artwork, and furnishings; website management; onboarding and offboarding; and other projects as needed.
