Dan specializes in optical and mechanical design for custom, two-photon, In Vivo microscopes at Janelia. He started in the field in the Svoboda Lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 2006, and began working in ID&F when the lab moved to Janelia at its opening later that year. Since then, he has built many microscopes, for many labs at Janelia.
Dan studied physics at Stanford University and applied physics at Stony Brook University, working in AMO, x-ray microscopy, and ultrafast laser chemistry labs. Since arriving at Janelia, Dan has taken classes on optical instrumentation and lens design at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences. He has become an accomplished lens designer, and has consulted on optical problems for several other projects while at Janelia.
